As I have mentioned, I now work at the wonderful Social & Personal Weddings magazine. (I’m not biased at all.) More specifically I have grown my baby (no not a real baby) socialandpersonalweddings.ie. This is what I was hired for, so while I have been lucky enough to write, not just for the wedding magazine, but the main Social & Personal magazine, my main goal was helping fill it with content and get it live. It’s been a long, exciting process that taught me a lot, but in particular, being only 22, it’s been interesting working on all things bridal and wedding. As such, it is only natural that I compile a list of questions I’ve been asked repeatedly since I got the job. If you have asked me any of these questions, don’t feel bad. You’re not alone, and you probably asked me ages ago, before it got repetitive.
I know that sounds depressing, but it’s really not. I’m not in some nondescript grey office building at a desk for eight hours logging random figures or sending unnecessary emails thinking about the career path I should have had. I’m still a writer, and I’m still in the media, it just happens to be 9-5.30 and I’m at a desk. And it’s a grey door not a grey building. The job itself is what I want, and I now realise that I stupidly used to think that all the fun, interesting and desirable jobs have bizarre working hours. “9-5” and “desk job” tends to be code for “boring” “stop-gap” “Plan B/backup” jobs, but I have decided that this is a hugely unfair stereotype and I know I’m not the only one whose dream job happens to be front of a desk. So as a lucky duck who managed to swing a full-time job in her dream industry, here is my list of pros that come with the 9-5 job.
Yesterday, I posted a link on my Facebook profile to sign this petition in a bid for Coca-Cola to pull their sponsorship from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia due to their anti-gay laws. I received a genuine argument against this action, where I was asked why should Coke be involved at all when it should be our government’s job to make our opinions known, and all Coke does is sell and unhealthy caffeinated drink. I appreciated the argument. I believe everything should always be questioned to make sure people have the answers. So here’s why I still believe Coca-Cola should pull their sponsorship.
Ok, I know I seem to be making a habit out of doubling up on the months I do blog recommendations but what of it? They still get there in the end. So here’s my recommendations for September and October. Go check them out, they’re almost as cool as this one.
Everything from serious news and editorial content, to pictures of cats and funny fashion faux pas, this website is relatively new but there’s a constant flow of content with a journalism background to back it up. A good one to check out for information.
While I try to seem like a crazy stalker girl, this blog is co-authored by a previous recommended blogger from the blog Sass & Balderdash. Although it is very new (it only launched at the end of September) I have faith in the writers and the posts that have gone up so far. Strong editorial comments on life and just a generally funny point of view.
I have recently opened up my mind to the idea that I should really feign a mild interest in major sporting events. Why? Because I am a journalist. I may not want to be a sports journalist but I now realise it’s just as embarrassing not knowing who’s in the All-Ireland Final as it is to admit that you didn’t know there was going to be a bus strike and it’s also embarrassing to admit you didn’t know the Royal Baby was born. (Don’t worry, I knew all of those things when necessary).
I am a girl who gets bored with things. I am the type who changes Facebook profile pictures constantly, I used to change Bebo skins every second day and could change my phone’s wallpaper on a regular basis. But then if I stick with something for long enough, it will be imprinted there permanently and it will take a lot for me to change it. I had one Facebook profile up for a year, my twitter profile has only seen two pictures in three years. You know when you get so used to something that you can’t imagine changing it to something different?
My humble blog turned two years old in April of this year and I’m happy to say that it is currently at its strongest. But I’m starting to wonder if I could own it a bit more? Make the design a bit more personal (without spending any money on themes). Continue reading
Today I am going to discuss what is possibly one of the greatest marketing strategies of my time – and to no one’s surprise, it belongs to Coca-Cola.
They have unleashed the beast that is “Share a Coke”, which, for those of you living under a rock, involves creating Coke bottles, replacing their iconic logo with people’s names; they are the top 150 (now 250 with the recent release of 100 more) most popular names, by country. While there are some unusual ones that make the list there are plenty of Irish spelled names that can be found in shops everywhere. Some people complain that they can’t find their name, others don’t like buying coke bottles with other people’s names on them. But not me. Continue reading
