Follow me to greener pastures

This is a letter to my loyal followers. I started this blog four years ago, and I didn’t really expect much from it. It was a personal blog, that allowed me to vent all my excess creativity, and while I did promote it across my social media platforms, I really didn’t set myself any goals. I didn’t blog by a regular schedule, sometimes months went by without a blog post, and there was no real structure to it.

And yet somehow, over the past four years, I have garnered 24,600 views, over 50 loyal blog followers and countless other likes, comments and general engagement. I’ve enjoyed it immensely, even though it really was just for my own personal use. Then again, my ego did like the positive engagement I received from the blogging community, which brings me on to the most important part of this post.

About a month ago, I decided to start a blog with my sister, Claire. Three weeks ago, we put that plan into action, and two weeks ago today, we put it live. In just 14 days, it has already had nearly 2,000 views. I’m so excited about this venture, not just because it’s a new project, but because it’s a creative collaboration with my sister, who I love and admire dearly, and am inspired by daily.

While my real-life friends and social media pals will know about our new blog already, it occurred to me today, that I have a surprising amount of blog followers who, for whatever joyful reason, enjoyed following my antics here on To My Write. In which case, I decided to tell you all about my new blog, Life Style Smile. I’m positive you’ll find this one even more enjoyable, as it’s much more regular, consistent, and focused. We’ll have some beauty, fashion, books, health, TV and some other funny stuff we like, try and do. Not to mention you get to meet my gorgeous sister, Claire.

I’m certainly not saying goodbye to To My Write, but for now, I need to focus my attention and Life Style Smile and I’d love if you would join me. Do leave us comments, share our posts if you like them and let us know what you think. I’d love to see some of my followers from this modest blog come over and follow my new adventure with my sister.

Fanny Crown Gown – A fashionista is born…sort of

So, working for magazines that have all things fashion, beauty and bridal, I’ve found myself  being questioned about all things wedding-related (before you ask, please refer to my FAQ on being a bridal writer) as well as questions on the best beauty products and the latest trends. While I am by no means an expert on anything fashion or beauty, I am starting to subconsciously pick up information and knowledge about both. I’m familiar with the latest trends, if I’ve tried any new products I’ll know if they’re any good and I’m starting to look at clothes and think not only when I’d wear it but also how I’d accessories it. Naturally, as a Pinterest addict, I’ve taken to making fashion mood boards in my head and when I saw this dress on Fanny Crown I just had to accessorize it.

Here comes the…bridal writer

BrideAs I have mentioned, I now work at the wonderful Social & Personal Weddings magazine. (I’m not biased at all.) More specifically I have grown my baby (no not a real baby) socialandpersonalweddings.ie. This is what I was hired for, so while I have been lucky enough to write, not just for the wedding magazine, but the main Social & Personal magazine, my main goal was helping fill it with content and get it live. It’s been a long, exciting process that taught me a lot, but in particular, being only 22, it’s been interesting working on all things bridal and wedding. As such, it is only natural that I compile a list of questions I’ve been asked repeatedly since I got the job. If you have asked me any of these questions, don’t feel bad. You’re not alone, and you probably asked me ages ago, before it got repetitive.

Drive-by blog post: My September/October blog recommendation

Ok, I know I seem to be making a habit out of doubling up on the months I do blog recommendations but what of it? They still get there in the end. So here’s my recommendations for September and October. Go check them out, they’re almost as cool as this one.

What to Know NowVicky Kavanagh

Everything from serious news and editorial content, to pictures of cats and funny fashion faux pas, this website is relatively new but there’s a constant flow of content with a journalism background to back it up. A good one to check out for information.

The NongenueKatie and Julie

While I try to seem like a crazy stalker girl, this blog is co-authored by a previous recommended blogger from the blog Sass & Balderdash. Although it is very new (it only launched at the end of September) I have faith in the writers and the posts that have gone up so far. Strong editorial comments on life and just a generally funny point of view.

BREAKING NEWS: Not all news is hard news

news_

News is “all kinds of everything”…sorry…I’ll leave now.

I have recently opened up my mind to the idea that I should really feign a mild interest in major sporting events. Why? Because I am a journalist. I may not want to be a sports journalist but I now realise it’s just as embarrassing not knowing who’s in the All-Ireland Final as it is to admit that you didn’t know there was going to be a bus strike and it’s also embarrassing to admit you didn’t know the Royal Baby was born. (Don’t worry, I knew all of those things when necessary).

Stepping out of your comfort zone

I wrote this for the Indie Sight after I bought five new pairs of shoes and a dress to force me out of my own comfort zone of bootleg jeans and runners. It worked, I went eight days without touching my runners or my favourite jeans. Now I have the best of both worlds. Leave me a comment if you have a comfort clothes zone you want to change. You can now see it on SheSays.ie

Almost every girl goes through this stage in their fashion lives. The stage where they find a comfort zone for clothes and wearing nothing but what they can find in that zone. It’s often the same type of zone. There’s the comfy jeans and runners zone, the baggy hoody zone, the all-black zone, the covered legs zone, the flat shoe zone. Everyone has a different variation or combination of zones. Unfortunately, when they’re trapped in this zone, anything outside it looks terrible. Jeans addicts can never seem to get into dresses. Runner addicts won’t wear pumps or heels. Hoody people won’t explore cardigans. Continue reading
